History of Linh Son Melbourne
|
The Melbourne Linh Son Buddhist Congregation was established and incorporated in March 1991 as the Melbourne branch of the World Linh Son Buddhist Congregation, under the efforts of the present Abbot, the Venerable Shikku Thich Tinh Dao. It commenced its services to the public since then, renting a small semi-detached house on Lincoln Street in the heart of 'Vietnam Town', North Richmond. The Congregation grew considerably during the first year of its establishment, drawing devotees from Richmond and the neighbouring suburbs. It was in mid 1994 when the decision was made to search for a bigger place, which could accommodate the rapidly developing congregation. With financial support from the organisation (i.e. The World LSBC), the Taiwanese Buddhist Foundation and local Laity, the Congregation managed to purchase the former Lakeside Primary School in July 1994, which has become the current monastery. It was a long and tedious and stressful process for Venerable Thich Tinh Dao, almost a miracle for the purchase of former Lakeside Primary School The land was very expensive and Linh Son had a strict budget, being a non profitable organisation. With persistence, faith, and mental support from many other Venerable and Nuns Lakeside Primary became Linh Son monastery. There were many articles in the local paper about the issue. If you would like to read them look under the 'About Us' menu on the left. |
